Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church was organized in 1869 when the African American members of Philippi Baptist Church requested permission to form a congregation of their own. There were fifty- two African American members that made up the original congregation, most of them were recently emancipated. We continue to lead our congregation in worship, deepening the connection to God, understanding the teachings of Christ, and ultimately to a vibrant faith.

We have a long history of serving the people in the surrounding community. From early on the church has showed its support of the community by supporting a school for African American children. Through the dedication of our leadership, staff and members, we are committed to the teachings of Jesus Christ, and are here to spread His message.
